Full Review Knights & Dragons ReviewBy, Herman Y.Knights & Dragons is a free-to-play, online social RPG developed by IUGO, the developers behind Walking Dead: Road to Survival- a special Telltale crossover game- and published by GREE, a large Japan-based company behind the strategy games, War of Nations and Crime City. Knights & Dragons was one of GREE’s first mobile games and was in the Top 10-50 grossing charts (on the Apple App Store and Google Play) in many countries for several years with currently over 10 million downloads worldwide. While the game looks quite outdated by today’s standards, it still has many redeemable features that make it a noteworthy game even in 2015. Knights & Dragons features an in-depth elemental advantage system mixed into its automated turn-based combat, lots of pets and equipment to collect/craft, a kingdom to build, and guild battles that makes it an addictive game suitable for people of all ages, although it is generally aimed towards a younger audience. Create Your Very Own KingdomIn Knights & Dragons, Players take on the role of a Commander Knight and have their very own city to build.
There is a wide selection of structures to build including Armorsmiths, guard towers, taverns, cathedrals, and more that players can place anywhere in their kingdom. While Armorsmiths have a purpose such as for crafting equipment, all the other buildings (with the exception of the starter ones) don’t have any specific purpose other than to generate gold. Each of these buildings generate a certain number of gold per hour (which have to be manually collected) and have a storage limit. They can be upgraded but have no purpose other than to generate gold so the Kingdom-building aspect is fairly simple. Considering players cannot attack other cities in this game (this isn’t one of those city building strategy games), defenses and other structures aren’t really required so the simplicity makes sense. Questing and ExplorationThere are a multitude of quests to be found in the world of Knights & Dragons. Upon starting the game, players are introduced to many charismatic characters including Gwen, the intelligent Court Wizard, Morgan, the sassy Armorsmith, and Artie, the humorous Squire.
These colorful characters provide players with hundreds of quests throughout the game, starting with a few that eventually lead to more and more. Completing a quest automatically unlocks a new quest, most of which are a continuation of the previous one story-wise. Each quest involves some character dialogue which provides a backstory behind the quests and requires players to complete an objective such as crafting a set of armor or defeating enemies in a certain area.
Completing quests provide gold, experience, and material for crafting elemental equipment. Crafting plays a large role in the game and players can craft armor simply by providing material (from completing stages) and waiting for armor to complete which can take from minutes to hours. More difficult bosses provide better material to create even more powerful equipment. There is a large world in the player’s fingertips.
Players start off in their kingdom and gradually discover more and more enemy bases and lairs surrounding their city. Each enemy hideout unlocks one at a time. In order to unlock a new hideout, which is covered by a fog of war, players must beat the previous hideout on Epic difficulty. Each dungeon has 5 difficulties that are unlocked upon defeating the previous one: Normal, Mighty, Valor, Honor, and Epic. After an area is defeated on Epic, a new area will appear featuring new monsters, bosses, and maps.
Defeating the different difficulties is usually tied to quests which give additional rewards and each dungeon gets increasingly difficult. Each of these hideouts also has an elemental theme which determines the elemental material the boss drops and these materials can be farmed by repeating the stage. Choosing the Right ElementKnights & Dragons has a simple, yet strategic, element system tied to its combat system. There are 6 elements in the game which include: Fire, Water, Spirit, Earth, Air, and Starmetal (rare). Players can have up to 6 Knights in their kingdom and each Knight is of a certain element except for the first Knight who can be any element. All equipment (Armors, rings, and amulets) also have an element and Knights can only wear equipment that matches their element.
However, some armors possess two elements which allow more than one type of Knight to equip it and actually give them an additional element. When a Knight wears an armor of two elements, it allows them to equip rings and amulets of the other element as well and gives them two element types in combat. Certain elements have an advantage over other elements. Fire beats Spirit, Spirit beats Earth, Earth beats Air, Air beats Water, and Water beats Fire (FireSpiritEarthAirWaterFire). Starmetal is a rare element that is powerful against every element including itself.
When Knights are of a stronger element (based on their armor), they deal 50% more damage to enemies, and if they are of a weaker element, they take 50% more damage from the enemies. Things get more complicated when Knights and monsters both have two elements, but generally, the formula remains the same. If one element is more powerful than the other, there is a 50% increase in damage. If both elements are more powerful than the other two, there is a 100% increase in damage.
It is also possible for the advantages to cancel out if both sides have one stronger element, and non-adjacent elements have no effect; For example, the elements Spirit and Water have no effect on each other. Overall, the element system is simple to understand but fairly in-depth and adds a strategic aspect to the combat. Fighting Your FoesKnights & Dragons features a simple automated, turn-based combat system that is relatively outdated by today’s standards but was probably more engaging during its time (2012). Players can have a party of up to 3 Knights at once, and each stage involves fighting through 3-4 waves of enemies. Rather than each Knight taking a turn to attack, only the Knight in front will attack enemies until he or she dies before the next Knight comes in.
The frontline Knight trades blows with enemies in an automated turn-based fashion and each wave consists of multiple enemies to defeat. There is also usually a boss battle at the end of each stage. The element system plays a large role in the battles as explained before, and players must assemble their Knights in proper armor before entering each battle. Players can also collect elemental pets via the Hunt mode that assist players in battle. Pets deal small amounts of damage but have activatable abilities to increase experience or gold from defeated monsters.
Knights also have one skill that players can activate every now and then that deals a lot of damage. Unlike a lot of other games, the health of Knights does not automatically refill at the end of each battle. Players will have to use health potions which cost premium currency or wait for their Knights to recover, which replaces the typical energy system. The Arena and GuildsThe more sociable and multiplayer-oriented aspects of the game comes from the PVP Arena and Guild system. Players can battle against other players in the Arena which involves battles similar to the single-player modes. Both sides can assemble a team of three Knights and battle it out in asynchronous, automated turn-based combat.
Players can earn glory from winning battles and there are special rewards for maintaining a consecutive winning spree. There are also guilds in Knights & Dragons which provides players with other people to talk with and there are guild wars to increase a guild’s ranking. Guild battles last for an hour and guild members can attack members of the other guild or the other guild’s castle during this time to earn points. Everything is asynchronous and the guild with the most points at the end of the hour wins. The guild battles are exciting and add a sociable aspect to the game. There are also boss raids that appear from time to time that players can participate in to take down powerful bosses that require a special Boss Raid energy but give great rewards.
Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)Knights & Dragons has fairly standard in-app purchases to summon random equipment as well as other advantages. With Gems players can summon equipment such as armor, rings, and amulets from a variety of chests that give out different equipment. The star rankings vary for different chests and some can give out crafting material or other items instead of equipment. There is a large gambling aspect to it but players have a chance of obtaining some really rare and powerful equipment if they are lucky. With Gems, players can also refill their Knight’s health, which is like energy, as well as refill energy for Boss Raids. Gems can also be used to revive fallen Knights in battles and purchase in-game gold.
On occasion, players can obtain free keys to open a chest containing only 1 star equipment, which of course, is not nearly as good as Gem chests. Overall, spending Gems is not entirely necessary to progress in the game but gives large advantages in better equipment for stage progression, PVP, and guild battles.
